Biography
Monty Porter is rated as an integral member of the champion St George pack that won premierships in 1958-60 and 1962-64. Originally from Tamworth Porter played for Wests and Thirroul before being signed by Saints in 1957. He was called into St George's first grade team for the final and grand final in 1958, playing prop. Porter played second row in the club's next three premierships and stamped his reputation as a solid clubman in a champion side. His sole interstate match was in 1960 and, after a mixed 1961 season, played in the club's next three grand final victories as a prop. Signing with neighbours Cronulla in 1966 (the Sharks were set for promotion into the NSWRL the following year), Porter was the club's first captain but retired after the 1967 season to take on the role of club secretary. In 1983 he was appointed one of the original members of the nine-man NSWRL Board of Directors.
