Alex Murphy resigned as coach of St Helens on the 3rd of January, 1990 (Reading Evening Post, 4/1/90, p23). Mike McClennan arrived as replacement in time for the 4th Feb match against Leeds, with Shane Cooper acting as player-coach in the interim.
