The QRL announced in November 2021 a number of changes in line with a long term strategy to increase investment in female pathways, while working towards getting the Women's Premiership aligned with statewide competition clubs.
As a result, Souths Logan returned for 2022, and the Valkyries from last season were no longer required.
Valleys Diehards, despite a strong season resulting in a grand final appearance, didn't survive the cut. Meanwhile Wests Panthers made it through an expression of interest process to make it in as the eighth team, but it was noted that this would be for the 2022 season only.
