Biography

Former St George five-eighth/lock spent two seasons playing in the country before being injured playing for Balmain in the first match of the 1957 season. Forced to retire, Broughton went on to coach St George's reserve grade to three premierships in four years (1962-64) before becoming the club's Chairman of Selectors in 1968. He chaired the League's coaching panel in the early 1970s and had a season as coach with Brisbane Brothers in 1974 before returning to Sydney to coach Balmain (1975-76) and Newtown (1977-78). In 1986 Broughton became the first full-time Director of Coaching with the NSWRL and was also Special Projects Manager. In 2004 he emerged as one of the key people behind the push to admit another G’Coast team into the NRL.

Paul was a Gentleman. I worked his father, and somes with Paul as an Apprenticed Scalemaker. I was only 15 and Paul set a great example for me. I often think I should contact him, however I would think he is busy in his various roles.
