Joined Rochdale on a trial/loan basis in late 1979 from Huyton. This resulted in a minor dispute after Huyton wanted a "fee" for his services. In the end it was agreed to allow the side to use Rochdale's Alan Bailey til the end of the season, provided Burns remained available.
