Eight years have passed since your comment, but I have only seen it today! Freddie Smart was born in Whitchurch, Cardiff played rugby league briefly for Huddersfield at the end of the 1920s before moving to Wakefield Trinity in 1930 where he played in 200 games, scoring 94 tries. He played for Wales in one international in 1933. In later years he became a rugby league referee despite living out of the area in Mansfield. He touch-judged many first team games, the height of which was his appointment as one of the touch judges to the 1963 Rugby League Challenge Cup Final at Wembley in which Wakefield defeated Wigan by 25 points to 10. Highlights of the match are on You Tube. He would have received his medal from Field Marshal Montgomery who was the guest of honour that year. I think that was his final match as there was an obligatory retirement age of 55 for touch judges and his name does not appear in the lists for following season. If you wished to email me at roger.stubbings@talktalk.net I could send you two photos of him
