Background
For some decades the achievements of Australian based rugby league players have been recognised by the number of First Grade premiership games they played in NSW rugby league, Australian rugby league and National rugby league competitions. The focus on these First Grade competitions has in part been due to the availability of comprehensive record keeping undertaken since the inception of the game in Australia.
While many of these players have also played in ‘high level’ domestic, interstate and international competitions, there has not been a commensurate structured recognition of these achievements. This in part has been due to the inconsistent recording of these games and the lack of an agreed framework for dealing with games beyond those of the domestic First Grade competition.
Over the past few years there has been a significant development in recording the detail associated with non-premiership games and competitions. For instance the Rugby League Project now has a comprehensive list of the various ‘high level’ Cup, interstate, international and representaive games and those that played in them. This work is supplemented by the work of individual club and independent historians and researchers.
In 2024 a group of rugby league historians and researchers discussed the issue of how rugby league players should be recognised for the high level non-premiership games that they had played. In working towards a framework it was agreed that any recognition of non-premiership games and competitions should not diminish the primacy of long standing domestic First Grade records as the benchmark for achievement in the game.
Various approaches were considered but the most logical path forward was to build on the framework adopted by the National Rugby League utilised for the Hall of Fame inductees. This framework refers to ‘high level’ games as First Class games. First Class games include First Grade premiership, some interstate games/competitions, some domestic Cup competitions, English Championship, some English Cup as well as most representative games.
Each element within the First Class framework stands alone but the player’s First Class record provides a more comprehensive picture of a player’s contribution to the game.
The First Class framework is also consistent with that adopted by the Record Keepers Club (RKC) based in the UK. RKC was formed to establish a common basis for recognising rugby league records. They have classified games/compettitions generally in the following categories.
- First Class Games – club matches and tournaments
- First Class Games – representative matches
- First Class Games – full internationals
While most First Class games and competitions are easily recognised, ongoing work will be required around the edges to determine whether some games/competitions should be either included or excluded. This may require a consensus position to be taken based on the principles and experience of those in the industry.
To assist, the following tables have been developed as an explanatory tool which is supported by a tiered approach to clarify what is included (Tier 1), what is excluded (Tier 2) and thirdly what requires further consideration (Tier 3). In time Tier 3 will disappear and those games/ competitions that are currently questioned will move to either Tier 1 or Tier 2.

Although the NZ Maori manager G Boss later stated that this game was an exhibition game it has historically been considered a Qld first class game.

- NB There were three Tests played on 12/12/1908, 23/1/19089 and 10/2/1909. The games against England on 2/1/1909 and Wales on 16/1/1909 are tour matches not Test matches.

The scores were not included in the competition tables and as such it is not considered a premiership game and is not first class.

This was an unsanctioned benefit match as such it isn’t considered first class.

The Australian Town and Country Journal stated, 'in order to keep the crowd in good humour a pick up team representing several teams played against South Sydney'. This team was selected from players that happened to be at the ground to watch the final, not the best available. Due to the ad hoc nature of the game, it is not considered first class.
