it was originally intended that the top four clubs in the Northern League should play off for this cup. But because Wigan and Wakefield Trinity had so many players on the tour to Australia, it was agreed that the next four clubs should compete. This Cup was initially supposed to be contested between the top 4 sides of the Northern Rugby League, however the top two sides, Wigan and Wakefield Trinity, had depleted playing stocks as they had provided quite a large number of players for the British tour to Australia. So it was decided that it would contain the teams placed 3rd to 6th on the table instead.
