After the regular Home and Away matches were played, every team had 2 wins and 2 losses. A third round of fixtures was hastily organised and on the occasion that each side won 1 game apiece, the points difference in that third round only would be the tie breaker. In the third round, Ipswich beat Toowoomba by 23 points, then Toowoomba beat Brisbane by 5 points. The final match would be between defending champions Brisbane and competition leaders Ipswich. The difference in points scored between the two sides was 28 points, meaning Brisbane had to win by 14 points to draw level with Ipswich and thus retain the title. They won the game but by a margin of 10, giving Ipswich the title despite losing the unofficial 'final'.
