The day after the first game of the tour had been played saw England declare war on Germany, commencing World War 2. The RFL held an emergency meeting the following day upon hearing this news and decided that the smartest and safest option was to cancel the tour. The NZ High Commissioner in London, Bill Jordan, managed to organise for the Kiwi players to board the ship that they had arrived to England on - the Rangitiki. While awaiting departure, the Kiwi's managed to sneak in a second tour game before leaving England the following day.
The New Zealand side had agreed to also include a tour to France, however the organisation of matches and opponents of the French leg were to be organised while the Kiwi's were in England. By the time the tour was cancelled, the French games had not been organised.
