I saw Jim in 1964 when he played in the Herbert River Comp in Ingham. I think he played with Lower Herbert club. I have this enduring memory of Big Jim running wide , dummying and fending and even stepping, to score and win a game. As he was captain coach, he usually spent a lot of time organizing play, but he could impact a game if needed

The Jim I saw carried a bit of " condition " but there was no hiding his class

Was good enough to go on Kangaroo tour with players like Noel Kelly, Norm Provan, Reg Gasnier and Johnny Raper. That didnt happen to Queenslanders back then unless you had that "something special" especially if you were from Townsville.

To get to Sydney you had to find an abandond house, wait for a cyclone, then tap your footy boots together 3 times and say, "There's no place like Sydney"
