Biography

Australian Test winger later had a successful career as a professional golfer. Playing for Glebe in 1928, Shankland represented NSW as five-eighth but moved to Easts the following year and shifted to his favoured wing role. Touring with the 1929-30 Kangaroos, the Easts flankman played in all four Tests on the historic tour and was top try-scorer (24 tries) and second highest point-scorer with 104pts (24t, 16g). Returning to Australia, he moved to Leeton in the Riverina as captain-coach before coming back to England and playing with Warrington. He captained the club in two Wembley Cup finals (1933 and 1936) and premiership finals (1935 and 1937) before his retirement in 1938. Shankland later turned his talents to golf and finished third in the 1939 British Open and fifth in the same event in 1948.

I grew up in potters bar when bill and tony jacklin played I was a young caddy and remember him now with great fondness and a great teacher one comment tony jacklin would never have succeeded without bill and a club member Wally de Badmey who supported him financially
