Biography
Newcastle Wests centre was a Country rep in 1982 before coming to Easts. Shifting to the forwards, 'Rambo' Ron Gibbs created headlines at Manly in 1987 when he signed with newly the formed G’Coast club midway through the season. Manly won the premiership that year and Gibbs was a star performer with his tank-like runs and hard, head-on defence. He was sent off in his last appearance in a Sea Eagle jersey - in the World Club Championship loss to Wigan. (Gibbs also had two controversial seasons with Castleford in England, which involved a four-match suspension.) At the G’Coast he broke his arm in a trial match and failed to reach similar heights despite a huge contract. He later took part in the Pacific Cup tournament in Tonga but the G’Coast cut him from the club at the end of 1990. Gibbs later successfully sued the club for breach of contract involving the failed payment of a block of land. In 1991 he played with Wests for match payments but after a good season, departed the club to captain-coach in the country.

Your Say
Paul Carter says: In 1982 Gibbs scored 3 tries for the Western Suburbs Rosellas as they Beat Kurri Kurri to win the Newcastle Grand Final 21-14 at Energy Australia Stadium when it was called the Newcastle International Sports Centre. (09/04/2010)
Dane-Michael Starwood says: Ron Gibbs was an outstanding and immensely talented rugby league player who was just an inspiration to watch and he really should have stayed at Manly. That spectacular try he scored for Manly against Souths was a hint of his greatness, and when tackling in defense he launched himself like a missile against the ball carrier, we won't see his likes again. (10/05/2011)
R says: Ron played for the Mudgee Dragons in 1992 as Captain/Coach. (18/05/2011)
Troy shepherd says: One of the hardest players to play the game. I used to have a chat to him at most giants home games . He would come out prior to the main game. Really top bloke, even had a few beers with him after the game at the club house (seagulls). Would have preferred him to stay at manly, but thems the breaks. Best tackle was when he broke wally lewis,s arm. (28/10/2011)
