Biography

Newtown junior (Lewisham) was graded with the club in 1948. A professional runner (he won the Hanlon Gift in Brisbane in 1957) Preston was chosen in the centres for NSW but a sprained ankle cost him his place in the State team the following year. His only major rep appearance was for ‘Rest of Australia’ v. Kangaroos in 1954 but he formed a tremendous wing partnership with Ken Considine at club level. Preston scored a post-war record 34 tries during the 1954 season (Considine scored 22 tries that year, for a combined total of 56 tries - easily a record for a pair of club wingers). Preston played in losing grand final teams in 1954-55 before leaving Newtown the following year with a club record number of tries to his credit. He spent the 1957 season as captain-coach of Macksville before joining a number of Newtown clubmates at P’matta.

Unquestionably the best winger not to represent NSW or Australia.
Amazing 107 tries in 117 games for Newtown (Bluebags).
34 tries in 1954 scored in 21 games.
A scratch mark professional sprinter, speed was his trademark.
