Biography

Brisbane Wests forward, originally from Caboolture, made his state debut as a lock in 1961 before touring NZ with the Australian team. Although an ankle injury sidelined him for much of that tour Day finally represented his country against NZ and South Africa in 1963 before touring with the Ashes-winning 1963-64 Kangaroos. He played in 18 games on tour, including the 50-12 ‘Swinton Massacre’ against Great Britain that secured the Ashes, and also one Test in France. Day’s last Test series was against France the following year and, in 1965, he defied a QRL ban blocking their state players from going to NSW to join Manly. He captained the club for several seasons but injury ruled him out of the club's loss to Souths in the 1968 grand final. Day later returned to Brisbane in 1969 to coach Redcliffe and later Souths. He passed away in 1998, aged 62.

Kennie Day was a big side stepping second rower. Played with Barry Muir at Wests in Brisbane before going to Sydney. He could bust a side open with his side step, and I feel he was very much under rated. He certainly was a star while playing in Brisbane.

Ken also went to Townsville in 1962 where he captain coached the Townsville representative team to win the Foley Shield as well as Townsville Souths to win the local competition.
