Fitzgerald was a great talent but lacked the desire to really make a mark on the game. A big hitter in defence who put his body on the line. A weak training ethic due to a troublesome skin condition meant fitness was an issue. Fitzgerald was a fiery customer who was predominately used off the bench due to fitness. Fitzgerald was a member of Newcastle's worst ever defeat in 2004 and soon after moved back to the bush to Mudgee. Fitzgerald switched codes to star for the Mudgee Wombats Rugby Union side in 2009 and played in his hometown's undefeated premiership winning side.
