Biography

18-year-old centre progressed from the local 'C' Grade competition to make his first grade debut for Balmain in 1963. Gary Leo quickly made his name as a punishing runner and progressing to the forwards, proved to be a valuable clubman for the Tigers. He represented NSW in 1967 and by the time Balmain faced Souths in the 1969 grand final he had already reached veteran status with the club. At 24, his experience was seen to good effect in the club’s 11-2 win over Souths and he later went on to captain the Tigers in the early 1970s. Leo left Balmain in 1974 with a club record 236 grade matches to his credit to take on a captain-coach role with Norths Newcastle.
