Biography
C’bury junior had a season with Widnes (1965-66) before going to Wollongong in 1966. Ward returned to C’bury but could not displace Ross Kidd at halfback and moved to Manly in 1968. After playing in the club’s grand final losses in 1968 and 1970, Ward was an integral part of Manly's first premiership-winning team in 1972. A ball of energy, and a potent field goal exponent, Ward represented Australia in two Tests on the tour of NZ in 1969 - thus becoming the first C’bury junior to play for Australia. He was also a member of Australia's World Cup squad in 1972 but took on a captain-coach position with Newcastle Wests after Manly's 19-12 win over Easts in the grand final. Despite being out of the Sydney spotlight, Ward played for NSW and toured with the 1973 Kangaroos, although he did not play in a Test match on tour. He later coached the Wynnum-Manly club in Brisbane in 1977 and was Queensland RL Coaching and Development Director during the 1990s.
