Biography

Penrith junior, the younger brother of Mark Geyer, followed his brother to Perth in 1997. Following the W’Reds’ demise Matt Geyer’s contract was picked up by the newly formed Melbourne Storm. After a slow start to the 1998 season, which saw him play with feeder club Brisbane Norths, he cemented a first grade place as a confident, hard-running fullback. His record 34 individual points (4t, 9g) scored from the wing in the 62-6 win over Wests in the early part of the 1999 season was a promise of things to come. Geyer was the season’s leading point-scorer that year (242pts - 20t, 81g) but it was his form in the open, especially his great partnership with Storm fullback Robbie Ross, which saw him represent NSW in three matches. (An interesting statistic – Geyer and Ross each scored a club record 20 tries that season). In the lead-up to the 1999 semi finals Geyer shifted to five-eighth and relinquished the goal-kicking duties. In the grand final against St George I’warra, Geyer landed the winning goal a minute before full-time after goal-kicker Craig Smith was knocked out and awarded a penalty try. Geyer returned to the wing in for a time in 2000 and equalled his club record 4 tries in a match, this time against the Warriors. When the Storm returned to the semi-finals in 2003-04, he continued to be one of the club’s most consistent players. Geyer was on the wing when the Storm won the minor premiership in 2006 and was beaten by Brisbane in the grand final. The last of the ‘pioneer’ Melbourne players remaining with the club in 2007, Geyer holds the record for most first grade appearances (209) and is poised to top 100 career tries.

what a great ambassador for rugby league & up to 2012 is still helping young footballers by coaching at junior level.
