Biography

Slippery' Steve Morris is the last player to have represented Australia while playing for a NSW Country team. In 1978 the live-wire halfback was playing for Dapto when he progressed through the Country and NSW ranks to play for Australia in the First Test against NZ. While this was to be his only Test appearance, Morris went on to have a long career in Sydney and in English club football. Joining St George in 1979, his duel with rival halfback, C’bury’s Steve Mortimer, was a highlight of the grand final and earned him the 'Dave Brown Medal' as the player of the match. In the mid-1980s, coach Roy Masters moved Morris to the wing (he had played in the centres with Dapto) and he scored St George's only try in the club’s 1985 grand final loss from that position. The 'Dally M' Winger of the Year in both 1984 and 1987, Morris saw out the final years of his career with Easts before playing with English club Leeds in 1987-88.
