Souths junior toured NZ with the club in 1929 but did not make his first grade debut until 1931. The Rabbitohs halfback played in the club's grand final wins in 1931-32 and made his debut for NSW in the latter year. In 1934 he guested for Wests on the tour of NZ. Williams captained Souths in the mid 1930s and toured with the 1937-38 Kangaroos, playing in two Tests against NZ and two against England. He later played for Newtown during the war years, and was captain-coach of the club in 1941.
