Coach Barry Seabourne quit before the first game of the season due to a player strike (Rothmans RL Yearbook 1990-91). Interim coaching was handled by assistant coach Tommy Smales and captain David Hobbs. They secured Ron Willey from Penrith as a full-time replacement, and he commenced the role on the 9th of October (Sandwell Evening Mail, 14/10/89, p34). Sometime in March 1990 (also according to Rothman's), Willey left the coaching role and David Hobbs resumed as player-coach, with the assistance of Tommy Smales, for the rest of the season (at least as of the game against Warrington on 25/3/90, according to the Liverpool Echo, 26/3/90, p23).
