In June, the Doncaster Lakers were on the verge of insolvency, with the club running out of cash after conceding 90 points at home against Widnes in round 8. They were saved by the RFL, who withdraw the club membership from the company which owned the Lakers, and handed it to a newly formed company headed up by two local businesspeople. This allowed them to take over the club without having to take on its existing debts. The club was deducted 6 competition points for the insolvency.

It was agreed to retain the use of the Lakers name to the end of the season.
