Biography

Former Lismore pivot, the younger brother of I’warra and St George coach Brian Smith, came to the Steelers in 1986. Smith again linked with his brother when he moved to St George in 1992 and was in the starting line-up in the club's 14-6 loss to Brisbane in the 1993 grand final. A snapped Achilles tendon suffered in a trial at Maryborough ended his plans for the season but he made a brief comeback with the Dragons in 1995. Smith joined his brother’s coaching staff at P’matta in the late 1990s before pursuing his coaching career in England with Huddersfield. In his first season as coach of Leeds in 2004, Smith guided the Rhinos to a hard-fought win over Bradford in the Super League grand final.

Played for the Dragons 1992 and 1993 grand finals both lost to Brisbane. Was useful 5/8 but never reached any great heights. Went to England to coach and had the most success with Bradford Bulls.
