Biography

Superbly gifted Great Britain Test forward (1973 Ashes series) declined to tour with the 1974 Lions, preferring to sign with C’bury instead. Lockwood's deft ball skills and inspirational efforts on the field carried a team of C’bury youngsters into the 1974 grand final. He later went to Balmain where the club experienced success in the 1976 pre-season and Amco Cup finals, before enjoying a belated tour with the Lions in 1979.

I played alongside Brian Lockwood in 1975 & 1976, I rate him as one of the best players I have seen. In his debut match with the Tigers we were thrashed 39-2 by south sydney. I wondered what brian thought he had got into. Anyway Souths finished last and we played off for the semis. In '76 we won the pre-season final against Manly & we won the Amco cup. Brian had a huge influence on these games. People still talk about his flick pass in combo with Neil Pringle. He was a champion.

I tried to emulate my game on Brians style. I believe that he was the best Ball player of his time, even greater than BEETSON. He would commit players with ball skills and then get the ball away without being touched. I always thought that was the better way to play RL especially as a Front- Rower. He still remains strong in my memory along with Bill Kirkbride.

Thank you for your lovely words about my dad Brian Lockwood, as a child I loved going to watch him play then go on to coach, I was born in Sydney in 1976 while he was playing out there so Australia had a special place in my heart .
