Biography
Murwillumbah hooker came to Brisbane Easts in 1972 before joining Wynnum-Manly in 1974. A Queensland rep against France in 1977 Dowling ventured to St George in 1979 but missed the club's grand final success that year because of injury. He went on to play in three State of Origin matches for Queensland in 1982 before returning to Brisbane at the end of the 1984 season. Dowling was a lower grade coach under Craig Young at St George in the late 1980s.

In 1980 John Dowling got a 10 in Rugby League Week.He got a 10 for St George after their 20-16 win over North Sydney at North Sydney Oval on April 27.

Also Dowling is still the only Hooker to ever get a 10.
