Johnny Stathers

Playing Career

Biography

Premiership-winning winger in St George's 31-7 thrashing of Easts in the 1960 grand final, Stathers' career (in which he also played fullback, five-eighth and halfback) was plagued by recurring shoulder trouble. In 1963 he broke his leg in two places after coming back from a shoulder operation. In 1965 Stathers left the club when he was transferred to Armidale as a teacher and was later acting Director of the Department of Sport and Recreation under Minister Ken Booth.

Johnny was my teacher at Carlton South Primary, a really nice guy, but often carrying an injury.
