A wonderful player, and with attitude ! I remember him mainly against the Bradford teams in the Conference, especially Dudley Hill. There were some good players around, but he was in a class of his own, with a demeanour to match. He sold the most audacious dummy I have ever seen one day at Dudley Hill where, he looked aghast at receiving the ball 30 yards from the opposition line, looking either side who to pass to, of course the players on either side were quickly covered, and John strolled over. A wonderful player !

Played against John a few times in Lancashire and he seemed a steady player but was a bit of a bully so watched out for him in our home games in Yorkshire. It was like he never got off the bus he hardly touched the ball and just hid for 80 minutes and even got in the showers in his underpants
