In 1952 prior to commencing as a player with South Sydney martin returned to his home town of Portland in Group 10 as a player coach, At the half way mark Portland were 6 points ahead in the competition . It was then that was typical of uncommited country players who complained about keeping healthy for game day by having early nights and sufficient sleep and it got worse where Martin had to blood new young players of which I was one and dropped the others accordingly we unfortunately did not make the finals due to having dedicated players rather than those without commitment
