Biography

Tall, pacy winger, originally from Brisbane Wests, played in two World Cup competitions - seven years apart! Rhodes came to C’bury in 1968 and played for NSW before being selected in Australia's successful World Cup side. Possessing great speed and footwork, his career with C’bury was plagued by leg and shoulder injuries (he played just 6 games in 18 months leading up to 1970). Returning to Brisbane to play for Wynnum-Manly, Rhodes made a remarkable comeback to rep football. Selected for Queensland, Rhodes won a place in Australia's World Series teams that defeated Wales, France, NZ and Great Britain in 1975. He later captain-coached Brisbane Valleys in 1977.

Johnny Rhodes was my idol as a match winning speedster for the berries when I was in my early teens.
