Biography

Durable centre/winger, the son of former C’bury player Jim Gartner, partnered Bob Fulton in Manly's 1976 grand final win over P’matta. Gartner achieved the high-point of his career with selection in the Australian World Series squad in 1977. He scored a spectacular 65m try in the final against Great Britain and was the season's leading try-scorer that year with 17 tries. Gartner's double in the 1978 grand final replay gave Manly its fourth title in seven years but his rep career faded in the early 1980s. After a period with Easts, his club career was resurrected at Balmain where the ‘Gartner’ magic of old resurfaced. He played in the 1988 grand final on the wing and retired the following year - a non-playing reserve in the Tigers' grand final loss in extra-time to Canberra.
