Biography

Newcastle junior finished his first season in the top grade as an interchange forward in the Roosters’ 16-13 loss to the Bulldogs in the 2004 grand final. The young prop was used to great effect as an impact player before cementing a regular first grade position in the disappointing 2006 season. Selectors liked what they saw, however, and despite the fact that he had not yet represented his State, Tupou was selected in Australia’s Tri-Nations squad at the end of the year. (Australian coach Ricky Stuart had been sacked by the Roosters but he would have known what Tupou was capable of). The young prop made the most of his opportunities; playing in four Tests (all from the interchange bench) and playing his part in Australia’s win in extra-time in the competition final in November.
