Biography

Nippy halfback from the Cronulla district overcame two shoulder operations early in his career to win the Rothmans Medal in 1988. Equally effective at five-eighth, Russell was quick and elusive with a great kicking game but his career did not 'kick on'. At the end of 1991 he resigned from the club in protest against the Sharks' player retention policy. He coached Easts’ President’s Cup team in 1993 but returned to Cronulla to coach the club's reserve grade side to grand final victory over Newcastle in 1994. Russell was later signed by Super League as the rival organisation’s junior development officer.
