Biography

In his debut season, the Newcastle junior was on the wing in the Knights’ maiden grand final win, the 1997 Optus Cup final against Manly. Hughes shifted to the centres in subsequent years before finally making his representative debut at fullback in NSW’s unsuccessful State of Origin defence in 2001. In September he savoured a second premiership title with Newcastle and was unlucky not to have been chosen to tour with the Kangaroos. Injuries limited his opportunities for further rep duty and he left the Knights to join French club Les Catalans for the 2006 European Super League campaign.
