Biography

Newtown junior graded in 1952 was a rugged forward for the club during the 1950s. Highly regarded by his peers, Ryan was one of the most under-rated players of the era. In 1960, he took on the position of captain-coach at Mareeba in far North Queensland where he led his team to the premiership and represented North Queensland against France. He returned to Sydney in 1961, linking with P’matta, before seeing out his career captaining Arncliffe in the Second Division competition. Ryan was later the co-publican of ‘Taylor's on Central’ Tavern at Surry Hills.
