Biography

Yet another member of Newcastle's ‘Kiwi connection’ during the Knights’ debut season, Shelford started his career with the Upper Hutt Tigers and was a prop in NZ's shock win over Australia at Lang Park in 1987. Shelford was selected for the Rest of the World side in 1988 but his stay with the Knights was affected by injury. He eventually played in the Wigan team that captured three successive Challenge Cups (1988-90), after a High Court dispute was settled between St Helens and Wigan (Shelford had signed contracts with both clubs). After a season with Manly, Shelford played for Wakefield Trinity in 1990-91 & 1991-92. The veteran of 8 Tests for the Kiwis died suddenly whilst teaching in England in 2003, aged 39.
