Gil Box was my father. Born 14 July 1916. He lived at Glebe in the heart of Tiger territory and played Junior League with the Roselle Club where he won an A Grade Premiership in 1937. He was graded with neighbouring Newtown in 1939 and played around 7 first grade games with them in 1939-40. League records show him has H. Box which was correct - his Christian name was Henry.
He commenced his career with Balmain in 1941 with his last game with the club at the end of 1946. Balmain & NRL records show him as G. Box. The "Gil" was a nickname and he was known as Gil/Gilly during his Balmain career.
Dad was the first grade half back with Balmain between 1941-43 with Jim Quealey five eight. The Balmain Club have confirmed from their records that Dad played around 14 first grade games in each of those years, including a Semi Final against St George in 1943.
Following the arrival at Balmain of Pat Devery, who played for Australia & Stan Ponchard as the halves in 1944 Dad then played the next 3 years mainly in reserve grade. Balmain reserve grade side was part of the clubs golden era winning both the first and reserve grade premierships in 1944 & 1946. Dad was the half back in both reserve grade premierships.
At the end of the 1945 season the Balmain club had a tour of Qld playing 5 games. According to newspaper reports Dad played a big roll in Balmains win over Townsville. Playing on that tour was Harry Bath making one of his first appearances with the Club before his First Grade debut in 1946.
After leaving Balmain in 1946 Dad took up a captain/coach position with country side Grenfell in 1947. The side playing in the Maher Cup competition with moderate success. He retired from football after the 1947 season.
