Biography

A product of St George's RU ranks Norm Tipping was hospitalised on the club's tour of NZ in 1933 after a match against Marist Brothers. In 1936 he suffered a spinal injury in a trial match against Canberra and was in a plaster cast for several months. Incredibly, Tipping resumed his playing career seven years later before moving into coaching. St George coach in 1956 when the proud club commenced its 11-year reign as premiers Tipping but was replaced by Ken Kearney as captain-coach the following year. Despite this snub Tipping remained a staunch Saints man; coaching the club’s President’s Cup team in the late 1950s and producing many of the club’s stars of the 1960s. He passed away in early 2002, aged 89.
