Jack was my great uncle. A school teacher Jack played for both Saints and Souths. He enlisted in WWII, as a gunner in the 2/15th Field Regiment and was captured at the fall of Singapore. Jack worked as a POW on the infamous Burma Railway where he passed away from malnutrition and cerebral malaria in 1943. Jack is buried in the Thanbuzayat War cemetery in Burma. Jack’s commanding officer said of him that he was a big man always out for helping his mates who were less able to carry out the work on the line.
