Vern Deacon played for Dubbo High School in the first Astley Cup football game in 1923. The Astley Cup was then played between Dubbo High School and Dubbo Sacred College. In 1925 the Astley Cup was expanded to include more sports and was played between Dubbo High School, Bathurst High School and Orange High School. Vern Deacon also played football for Dubbo High School in the 1925 Astley Cup. The Astley Cup is still going each year with the three public high schools from Dubbo, Bathurst and Orange competing. Dubbo High School ceased as school in 2001 when Dubbo College was formed. Dubbo College was formed when the three public high schools in Dubbo merged. Dubbo College now competes in the Astley Cup. Since 1925 the Astley Cup has been only cancelled three times - in 1931 because of the Great Depression, in 1940 because of the Second World War and in 2020 because of COVID-19.

Vern Deacon played with and coached several rugby league teams in country NSW after he left Sydney.
