Biography

Waikato RU product, a rep for NZ Colts, changed codes to play with Norths in 1991. Halligan broke Fred Griffiths' long-standing club point-scoring record that year, scoring 196pts, but missed five goals in the semi-final loss to premiers Penrith that would have taken the Bears into the grand final. The tall winger again topped the point-scoring list in 1992 and despite Norths' fall from grace in the premiership the following year, he was the top point-scorer for a third year in a row. After playing for NZ in 1993’s Trans Tasman series, Halligan appeared in two Tests on the tour of Great Britain and France at the end of the year. On his return he pursued a release from Norths after the club signed Kiwi teammate Sean Hoppe and was quickly snapped up by C’bury. Halligan was quickly acclaimed as the ‘buy of the season’ and was the leading point-scorer for a fourth time, finishing the year with 270pts – a C’bury club record at the time. Maligned in some quarters for his defensive efforts, Halligan produced a fine display in C’bury's semi-final win over Canberra in 1994 - potting the winning field goal in extra-time to propel the Bulldogs into the grand final - and enjoyed premiership success with the club in 1995. For a time he held the record for landing 30 consecutive goals (since bettered by Hazem El Masri). The greatest point-scorer in the history of the game when he retired (2032pts) Halligan’s record lasted just 12 months until beaten by Jason Taylor and his C’bury club records have been surpassed by Hazem El Masri. Halligan, who revolutionised the art of goal-kicking when he used a plastic tee, later joined NZ’s All Black ranks as a goal-kicking coach.
