Biography

Brisbane Souths forward earned a place on Australia's 1971 tour of NZ, making his Test debut in the 24-3 loss in the mud at Carlaw Park. Murphy, who was a skilled ball-distributor at second row, ventured to Sydney to play with Wests in 1973 but suffered a broken jaw in a pre-season match. Four such injuries severely hampered his playing career, requiring him to wear unusual headgear incorporating a jaw brace in his matches.
