Biography

Robust winger/centre played in the Rabbitohs’ grand final wins in 1970-71. After gaining a place in Australia’s victorious 1970 World Cup squad, Ray Branighan made his Test debut in the Kiwi’s upset win at Carlaw Park in 1971. Branighan was lured to the big-spending Manly club in 1972 and played a major role in that club's first premiership success. Partnering the brilliant Bob Fulton in the centres, Branighan scored 15 points in the 19-14 grand final win over Easts (1t, 6g) - one point short of Harry Bath’s individual points record. Selected in Australia's World Cup squad in 1972, he backed up for another premiership win with the Sea Eagles in 1973 before touring with the Kangaroos and playing all five Tests in England and France. Branighan played in the 1975 World Series competition but left Sydney at the end of 1978 after being a reserve in Manly's courageous win in the grand final replay to take on a two-year contract as captain-coach of Ayr in Queensland.
