Thomson also played for NSW Colts against France that year and represented NSW in 1967 before making his Test debut against NZ. He then toured with the Kangaroos at the end of the year, making one Test appearance against France as well as playing in 13 other matches. The nuggetty second rower came to Manly in 1969 and despite relative club success he did not represent at a higher level again. The following year he returned to Lakes United in the Newcastle competition and captained Country Firsts. Thomson returned to Manly as coach in 1980 but the stay was brief with the club failing to make the semi-finals. The uncle of Australian Test forward Ian Thomson he coached Country in 1985 before becoming a member of the NSWRL Judiciary.

Played against Allan in my first ever first grade game for Maitland in 1976 as a 19 year old fullback. I made the mistake of taking the ball into the forwards, he hit me horizontal I could not believe a human could be that hard , he was made of granite. Had the pleasure of playing with him for Maquarie United in 1977, one tough man.
