Biography

The younger brother of St George legend Norm Provan captained Balmain to win the premiership in 1969. A rangy lock, Peter Provan started his career with the Dragons and played in the 1958-59 grand final wins with the club. His performance in the latter match was a standout and Balmain signed him in 1960 when he felt he had a better chance there to further his career. Provan was unfortunate in that he blossomed at the time when Johnny Raper was at the peak of his career, but he grabbed his chances when he could and made his sole Test appearance against NZ in Sydney in 1963. He played for Balmain in two losing grand finals (1964 & 1966) before he defied injury to lead the Tigers to a courageous win over Souths in the 1969 premiership decider. Provan retired after the match and he and Norm Provan remain the only set of brothers to lead teams on victory laps of the SCG at grand final time.

My late father went through national service wit Peter Provan and was born ironically, 2 days after Peter.
