Biography

Newtown five-eighth was selected for Australia in the first two Tests against Great Britain in 1958 but missed the deciding match of the series because of injury. Brown played in three Tests against NZ the following year and toured with the 1959-60 Kangaroos. He made just one Test appearance against France on the tour but played against Italy on the journey home. Brown played in one further Test match against France in 1960 before being selected in Australia's World Cup team. He went on to captain Newtown for six seasons until being released by the club in 1964. Signed by Second Division club Penrith, he captained the Panthers in the opening rounds of the 1967 season before a leg injury ended his career.

“Tony”s real name is Andrew John Brown
As a young fella playing in the back streets of Alexandria he was told by the ice man that he didn’t look like Andrew and that he looked like
a “ Tony”. The name has stuck, possibly helped along by the initial a common to both names
