Biography

A product of P’matta RU club and a capable grade cricketer, Arthur Clues joined Wests RL Club in 1943 and within three years, had established a reputation as a tough but creative second row forward. A NSW rep in 1945-46, Clues played in all three Tests against Great Britain in 1946 before becoming one of the first post-war Australian players snapped up by the wealthy English clubs. Tall for a second row forward, Clues signed with Leeds and played eight seasons (including the 1947 Challenge Cup final) before seeing out his career with Hunslet (1954-57). In the early 1950s, he was regarded as the finest forward in England - a powerful runner with a fine mid-field sidestep – who represented Other Nationalities 14 times during his English Club career.

Arthur Clues was one on a number of top expat Australian players who migrated post-war to Britain to earn their livelihood through professional league (along with Lionel Cooper, Trevor Allan, Harry Bath and others). These stars sacrified their chances to represent Australia (or to play a substantial number of tests
for their country). Instead, whilst resident in England they were usually the first picked to represent 'Other Nationalities' in unofficial tests against Great Britain.
