Biography

Rated by many judges as the finest second row forward the game has produced George Treweeke came to Souths from Grahamstown near Tumut after playing in a trial against a visiting Mascot team. He was a gangly fullback then - ‘all arms and legs', as one critic noted - but proved to be a great success when he moved into the forward pack. Treweeke played for Souths during the club's premiership-winning years in 1926-29 and 1931-32. He represented NSW in 1927 before making his Test debut against England in 1928. A Kangaroo tourist in 1929-30 Treweek played in the historic four-match Test series in England and was a try-scorer in Australia's First Test victory. Treweeke proved his stamina and determination captaining Souths in the 1930s and his reputation as an attacking forward is legendary. He continued playing for NSW until 1933 but declined to tour with the Kangaroos that year due to business commitments (he had recently bought a butcher's shop). He retired gracefully, not having the heart to tell the press that they had incorrectly spelt his name (Treweek) during his entire career. George Treweeke, a gentleman to the end, died in 1991 aged 86.

Additional Notes

Name was incorrectly spelt "Treweeke" by the press until after he retired.
