Biography
Nimble, light-weight forward played first grade soccer before changing ‘football’ codes to play with Glebe rugby league club. Gray went on to represent Australia in the Ashes-winning series against England in 1920 and was also a 1921-22 Kangaroo. He was chosen in the First Test at Leeds but suffered a bad knee injury in the 6-5 loss, which limited him to just five matches on tour. Rated by legendary halfback Duncan Thompson as the greatest forward of ‘all time’ for his weight (10st 6lb to 11st), he was a member of the Glebe team beaten by Norths in the 1922 final. Gray later put his judgement to the test as a graded referee and a NSW and Australian selector.

Additional Notes
Served in Europe with the 5th Pioneer Battalion during WWI. By the end of the war, he had been promoted to sergeant and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his efforts.
