Darren Waters originally came from Perth and had the distinction of playing for the 1982 Kangaroos. As the Test 15 were in PNG for the international the remaining 13 led by Wally Lewis went to Perth to play WA. With the team having no replacements, 2 local up and coming players were selected these were 18 year old Darren Waters from the Wanneroo club and Darren Riley, 20, from the Belmont club.
